From Cut-off to Kick-off: Dynamic Modeling and Mitigating the Relative Age Effect
The Relative Age Effect (RAE) is a well-documented phenomenon resulting from age-based grouping in youth sports, whereby relatively older athletes within the same cohort often benefit from physical, psychological, and motor development advantages. These initial differences can influence talent identification, training opportunities, and long-term athletic progression.
In this presentation, a dynamic systems model is introduced to examine and mitigate the RAE among male handball players within the French Handball Federation, from youth categories through to the professional level. Using system dynamics and federation data, the model simulates player progression and the accumulation of experience across age cohorts. A reinforcing feedback mechanism captures how early advantages in size and weight may translate into enhanced perceived ability and increased development opportunities.
Several policy scenarios are assessed to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing the RAE. The findings indicate that adjusting age-group cut-off dates may be the most effective intervention, with the potential to improve talent identification processes and reduce dropout rates among younger players. More broadly, the research provides valuable insights for policymakers and sports organizations seeking to address the RAE in handball and other team sports.
We look forward to seeing many of you there.
